Filing Genie

Bookkeeping and statutory filing, for UK limited companies

Every deadline you owe, in one place.

Filing Genie keeps your books, prepares your VAT returns, and tracks what Companies House and HMRC are expecting from you — so nothing arrives as a surprise letter.

See how it works

Import your existing bookkeeping from a spreadsheet.

Your filing year

An example — a company with a 31 March year end, filing VAT quarterly. Not real filings.

  1. 7 August 2026 VAT return — quarter to 30 June Prepared from the ledger, nine boxes reviewed Ready to file
  2. 14 September 2026 Confirmation statement Companies House · officers and shareholdings unchanged Due in 19 days
  3. 7 November 2026 VAT return — quarter to 30 September Books reconciled to 31 August In progress
  4. 31 December 2026 Annual accounts Companies House · nine months after the year end Not started
  5. 1 January 2027 Corporation tax payment HMRC · nine months and one day after the year end Not started

Four jobs, one system

Most small companies run bookkeeping in one place, VAT in another, and Companies House in a browser tab they forget about. Filing Genie is all of it, working from the same set of numbers.

Bookkeeping

Import transactions from a spreadsheet or enter them directly. Categorise once and everything downstream follows.

VAT returns

Your return is built from your books, not retyped from them. Review the nine boxes, with every figure traceable back to the transactions behind it.

Companies House

Confirmation statements and annual accounts, with your filing dates tracked against your year end.

Corporation tax

The computation runs off the same ledger as the accounts, so the two cannot disagree with each other.

Built for the part that actually goes wrong

Penalties rarely come from bad arithmetic. They come from a date nobody was watching.

Dates in full

Every deadline is written out — 14 September 2026, not 14/09/26. No ambiguity, no misread month.

Receipts you can produce

A filing is not filed until a receipt comes back. The reference is stored against the period it belongs to, in a form you can read back over the phone.

Nothing hidden

No collapsed rows, no summary that quietly rounds. What you file is what you reviewed.

Your data, exportable

Journals, trial balance and statements out as CSV, XLSX or PDF whenever you or your accountant need them.

Filing with HMRC and Companies House is not live yet.

The VAT connector has submitted a return to HMRC's test service and had it accepted, and HMRC's check of the fraud prevention data it sends has passed. No return has been filed with HMRC for real, production credentials have not been issued, and corporation tax and Companies House filing are not built. Everything up to the point of filing works today: you can keep your books, prepare a return, review it and export it.

Questions

Do I still need an accountant?

Plenty of people use both. Filing Genie handles the record-keeping and the routine submissions; an accountant is worth having for judgement calls, unusual transactions and tax planning. The export formats are built so your accountant can pick up your books without rekeying anything.

Can I move my existing bookkeeping across?

Yes. Import a spreadsheet of transactions and map your columns once. If you are mid-year, bring in an opening trial balance and carry on from there.

What if I miss a deadline anyway?

Filing Genie tracks the date and flags it, but it cannot file on your behalf without you reviewing and approving the submission. The legal responsibility for filing stays with the company's directors.

Where is my data kept?

Your bookkeeping — the transactions, the statements and the returns you prepare — stays on your own device, in your browser. If you create an account, the account itself, the companies you add to it, your connection to HMRC and the record of each return you submit are held by the Filing Genie service in Microsoft Azure's UK South region, in London. A copy of Filing Genie opened from a file, with no account, keeps everything on your device.

What about Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?

Filing Genie does not do it. MTD for Income Tax applies from April 2026 to qualifying income above £50,000, from April 2027 above £30,000, and from April 2028 above £20,000. If you are in scope you need software that supports it, and this is not that software yet. Check your own position on GOV.UK — the thresholds are based on qualifying income, not profit.
